8 1/2 is a 1963 movie directed by Federico Fellini and starring Marcello Mastroianni and Claudia Cardinale. It is often touted as one of the finest movies ever to be made in any country. The title is a reference to the number of films Fellini had directed prior to this one (one was a collaboration).
The plot revolves around a director named Guido Anselmi (Mastroanni) who is suffering from director’s block and has no enthusiasm for his newest film, a sci-fi flick. As he struggles to get his fledgling film of the ground he’s left to deal with marital difficulties and the increasing pervasiveness of flashbacks to women who he’s loved in the past, one of whom is a woman named Claudia (aptly played by Cardinale).
Naturally after looking into those dreams he finds the shelter he needs to go ahead and create his film the way he wanted to, and all is (kinda) well in the end.
